Interesting read, clearly Luther has a good understanding of the Jews in his time. However, this booklet is omitting important parts. Throughout the book there are passages that Luther wrote and then there are remarks like "Here Luther goes into a lengthy list of scripture passages that confirm fact X".Yes, that's why I bought this in the first place, because I WANT those references. I mean what is the point of buying a book that was written by the founder of the protestant religion and that promises to explain the Jewish problem based on the Bible when you don't give the Bible references?What remains looks, on the surface, just a like a bunch of rants by an antisemite when it is clear that Luther put great effort into collecting supporting lines from the Bible.So any criticism I read here about "Luther is just a hater" probably is founded in the fact that this edition of his text is badly crippled and leaves out the parts that would make his point. It's not Luther's fault, it's the publisher's fault.I'm going to keep it though as a basic reference, but I really wished the publisher had not chosen to save a few pennies on paper cost and gave us the full text. As is, this booklet is a curiosity, certainly transmitting the point that Luther must have good reasons to resent Jews, but this book fails to give us the complete picture.

honest book that some people wish you wouldn't read. notice they do not ever debate the contents, because all of it is true

I just finished reading my 2004 Liberty Bell Press reprint of *On The Jews And Their Lies* (the $7.95 edition with wandering Jew caricature on the cover). I found this work of Dr. Luther interesting. My only complaint is that the editors at Liberty Bell chose to omit many passages that they felt were deeply "scientific" or "theological". Why? If one wants to read a Bible based dissertation on the JQ, as I did, then one wants to read it -not just the high points of it. I have no idea how long the original book even was. The short version is still interesting, but just unfulfilling as we do not know all the scriptural reasons behind Martin Luther's arguments. I would have given it four or five stars had the book been the full edition.

An extremely poor translation. This edition is abridged of most all theological references and exposition.

In a nutshell, what is this book? It is a frustrated, angry polemic against the central tenets of Judaism based upon the harsh life experiences of a 16th-century German ex-monk. So why does this rant garner so much attention? Because the ex-monk who wrote it is Martin Luther, one of the most important figures in the history of the Christian church (Luther was the father of the Protestant Reformation). In this booklet, Luther confuses individuals and groups: he confuses the bad behavior of a few to be representative of all people in an entire group. Using that same logic, readers today should not confuse Luther’s outspoken opinions to be representative of all Christians. This is why Christians don’t have ultimate faith in Martin Luther and what he says. We have ultimate faith in Jesus Christ and what God says in the Bible.The first thing potential buyers should realize is that this is abridged version of Luther’s original work. When I say “abridged” I am being kind because more than 2/3 of the original have been gutted. This explains why there are frequent notes in the text alerting readers that certain proofs and Scriptural references have been omitted. What’s left captures the main idea of what Luther wrote and in many respects the abbreviation is fitting since even in this trimmed version, the content is very repetitive. Still, this version is NOT the full text.Second, it helps to know from a historical and theological perspective why Luther wrote this book. On page eight he writes that he permitted the booklet to go forth so that Christians may be on guard against the “poisonous” undertakings of the Jews. What are some examples of said undertakings? Two big ideas mentioned repeatedly are usury and the denial of Jesus as the Messiah. Luther goes as far to say that next to the devil, the Christian has no more vehement an enemy as a Jew (page 27). He thus intended to equip Christians with a figurative shield to guard against false doctrines. Such equipping details, for example, what the Babylonian Talmud says about Jesus and Mary.Ultimately, the Bible makes clear that Christians are never called to build an earthy kingdom but to be ambassadors of the kingdom of heaven. As Luther himself writes, the ultimate goal of Christendom is never to build an ideal society right now here on earth (c.f. pg. 56). Hence, when Luther writes that we must not take revenge, treat with mercy and demonstrate godliness those who do not know Christ (pg. 37), then he is writing precisely in line with biblical teaching. When he writes that the State should use its power to prohibit Jews from owning houses, to take away all their books, prohibit them from teaching, remove all protections of their life and liberty (pgs. 38-39), and refuse to let them have synagogues (pgs. 52-53), he falls way, way off the mark.Why two starts and not one star? Because this book teaches a valuable point. It proves that all people—even the “really good” Christian ones—are broken. This is why all human beings need a Savior whether they realize it or not. That is an idea that Martin Luther did a marvelous job of proclaiming his entire ministry.
