In the middle of reading this. Thoroughly enjoying it - the author is intimately familiar with Heinlein’s work.

This is the book about Heinlein I've long wished for. The author provides a balanced, nuanced reading of Heinlein's career as a whole, his views on various topics and how they evolved, and fascinating close readings of all his major works. The style is lively and lucid. No dedicated fan of Heinlein will want to pass this up.

I devoured this book in a week, and was left feeling I understood Heinlein's work far, far more than I had before. A must if you live his work, or even if you don't.

Heinlein scholarship goes back to when his career was still in full force (when he was the single best-known science fiction author in the world, and when our attitudes on race and sex weren't what they are now). I've been reading from the stream of scholarly works since Panshin's ground-breaking Heinlein in Dimension (published in 1968) and this is the best book about the books I've found for today.In particular, it does a neat job of balancing what Heinlein's work meant to readers *then* (which is what built his reputation) and what it will mean to modern readers today (to old people like me it mostly means the same thing it did when I first read it, sometimes with shifts of emphasis).Heinlein was always talking about social construct and political choices in his books, even in those specifically intended for a young male audience (the "juveniles"). The combination of what Heinlein wanted to convey, what he could say and still get published for that market in the 1940s and 1950s, and how things have changed in the last 50 or so years leads many people to mis-understand what Heinlein believed, and others to mis-understand how well some of these books will stand up for new young readers today.Ms. Mendlesohn clearly writes from a deep familiarity with Heinlein's work, fiction and non-fiction, and also with the other science fiction published then, and with a grasp much better than mine of the other critical work. This book is necessary reading for anybody serious about Heinlein or the history of science fiction.
