I enjoyed this book...I like to read travel type books and hear about other peoples' adventures. The author is very good about not only telling about what happens and what she sees, but also what is going on in her mind and her feelings...like missing home and her girlfriend. Which leads to my only warning about this book...the first 1/3 of the book is like a lesbian love story which gets rather erotic at a few points...just so you are not surprised like I was. That does not stop me from recommending it, though!
I loved this book. The author really makes you feel like you are with her traveling and seeing these different countries. However, the book is a little light on the countries themselves. That is both its greatest strength and its weakness. You see this book is more about the author's journey through life with her trip being kind of a nice background. That doesn't make it a bad book, I absolutely love it, but I gotta admit that weakness is there. I mentioned it was the book's strength. Well it absolutely is because the book is strong character wise with great secondary characters that you hope to see pop up again, and when they sometimes do, you almost feel that joy the author feels. The author herself is also an interesting character and I loved learning about her culture. A travel book where you learn more about the culture of the author and her feelings toward what she left behind than the countries she travels through. Sounds weird right? It is and that is what makes this book so unique and awesome.
In this finely crafted, intelligently nuanced work, the author informs us with her depiction of the history and culture of these old and largely unknown neighboring lands, even as she humanizes and gives immediacy of feeling to her passage through these unfamiliar territories. When McCahill decided to pattern her journey through Latin America on that of Paul Theroux in The Old Patagonian Express (1979), she courted a piece of fortune beyond the lot of most United States residents. These reflections play out in a far grander scale than the parade of male politicians on TV, or the colonialist disdain of her grouchy predecessor Theroux (the meeting with Borges notwithstanding), obviating and, at the same time, giving perfect placement to the good-natured bystander on the make who suggests at one point that she call it "Kate's Adventures." This book has a lot to offer. Don't miss it.
Most travel books suffocate with cloying sentimentality, bravado, or vain attempts to describe and explain the addictive appeal of travel. This one does not. The writing is spare, direct, and cuts like a knife with its power of understatement. Miss McCahill can write! I see that some reviewers here complain about a lack of descriptions of the local cultures. There is some merit to that complaint, but only if you are expecting a travel book on the order of Lonely Planet. This memoir is more about a mental journey than a physical one.
This is an incredibly powerful take on the "stranger in a strange land" story. It's written expertly and with unbelievable clarity, passion, and honesty, to the point that it's impossible to categorize. It's not just for fans of travel writing or those who wants to learn about Latin America; the heart of Patagonian Road is the inner life of the narrator, which covers vital ground for LGBTQ+ folks, travelers, lovers of all stripes, and anyone struggling to belong.
And realize that my world and theirs have much more in common than I ever thought about. It makes me feel lucky and sad at the same time.
It's a perceptive and personal account of many places and the people there, and it's accurate based on my own observations from the few locales where I, too, have been. It's also a perceptive and personal analysis of how the experiences permanently affected and matured the author, and this is where the book shines. Writing is as clear, smooth and expressive as any author can produce. Pleasure to read this book. Hope she will write more.
A reflective, honest account of a year spent traveling alone in Latin America. We often hear travel tales told from a male perspective, and this was a refreshing account in a woman’s voice, what it’s like to be a woman traveling alone, but not dwelling on the fact that this is different. The author’s writing style had me right there with her, and I could feel the feelings I would have in her place while marveling at her ability to wholeheartedly be present where she was and take on this tremendous adventure. Wonderful read that went by too quickly. I can’t wait for more of her work.
