Amazon Best Sellers Rank:
#1,527 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
I bought this book on sale as a "break" from reading the darker materials I have for work and the more hefty classics I generally read for fun. I often feel like I don't read enough modern best sellers, and the blurb for this book sounded fascinating. I love reading books set in Asia and Africa, especially about the interaction between Europeans or other invaders/interlopers. So, I was excited to read this book.I started reading and honestly it's been difficult to overlook the writing. It's pretty awful. People have weird, stilted conversations where they mention information (such as a family member's age, or the main character's job as a "famous concert pianist") all the freaking time. It's totally unnatural, and really annoying. Or they'll go into detail about the sisters' relationship with one another in each woman's thoughts to develop the characters (I guess?), but it just doesn't work. No one sits around thinking coherently about the psychological impact of their relationship with a sibling. Maybe I'm being over-critical, but her writing makes it very hard for me to feel like I'm in the book's world, and it makes the characters seem flat and unsympathetic. This is all the more disappointing because the idea for the story is really fascinating. I'd almost give the book three stars just because I like the idea, even if the execution is poor. There are lots of family secrets and history that are explored, which always makes things interesting. So, in summary, if you want a quick read with an interesting story and can forgive some poor writing choices, go for it, especially since this book is currently $2. Even if you hate it, you'll get $2 worth of entertainment out of it. If you're used to reading literature, put emphasis on natural character development, or really need a good flow to get into a book, don't buy it. Get it from the library or read the excerpt first.
I got bored and I was so disappointed. I was really expecting a close match to Kate Morton's storytelling and suspense. The story was predictable to me. I couldn't connect to the characters except Olivia and she wasn't always in the spotlight. I disliked Harry and Julia's husband and their selfishness. I got annoyed with the repetition of Julia not being able to get over the death of her husband and son. I thought the book had 5 places where it could have ended but kept going. 10 chapters could have been cut out easily. All the other reviews who had 2 or less stars said it all and I agree with them. Skip this.
Really, truly did not like this book. I'm giving it 3 stars only because I think I went into it with unrealistic expectations, otherwise I would give it a worse rating. I wanted to read a nonfiction book about Thailand/ SE Asia and this was very much billed as just that book. And admittedly I did enjoy the chapters spent in those locales. However, these chapters were few and far between, and I found myself reading a book that takes place almost entirely in England and France. In addition, the plot was very predictable, although I will give the author credit for throwing in a few curve-balls, and her portrayal of grief was well-developed. Otherwise the overarching story was rather dull since I could tell where it was heading.
Where else but the afternoon soap operas would people come back from the dead, marry a prince and reconcile a huge pile of family secrets while traveling around the world, possessing incredible musical talent, unlimited money, breathtaking good looks and the ability to move one's emotions and "true love" from man to man within a week? But all this and much, much more happens to our heroine in this trite and predictable soap opera of a book. Between flashbacks, mystery diaries, related lovers, exotic locales and more we experience everything that we expect and unfortunately not much more. This book is incredibly predictable. I knew when I started what the outcome would be. I could tell at the start of each chapter what the end of that chapter would be. Why I read to the end is a mystery to me except that I kept hoping against hope that it would get better. It didn't. I was as disappointed at the end as I was 20 pages into the book. And added to that this book is poorly researched and has several errors and inaccuracies that detract from the story for any reader with more than the most mouth-breathing knowledge of the environments that are discussed. This book was a great disappointment in many ways and I am sorry that I wasted my time on it.
A great read. I will preface this review with the fact that I have never taken the time to write one before. But because I have found an author whose work I truly enjoy reading, I wanted to make the time to write it. Riley's writing flows beautifully and captures me from start to end. I love a book that just makes we want to keep reading and never contains a dull paragraph. This is the kind of book where I could be stuck on an airplane not able to take off, but if reading this, I am taken away to another world and do not even notice the wait. In particular, I like how the sections flip from one time era to another, the perspective you gather from each, and the suspense (and not easy to predict) of "how it will all turn out." This is the second Lucinda Riley novel I have read (I also loved her Midnight Rose), and because I love the way her writing flows, her amazing ability of story-telling, I am inspired to read every novel she has written. Very, very good.
