From Publishers Weekly

Muckraking has a long, storied tradition, and Palast is evidently proud to be part of it. In this polemical indictment of globalization and political corruption, Palast (a reporter with the BBC and London's Observer) updates the muckraking tradition with some 21st-century targets: the IMF, World Bank and WTO, plus oil treaties, energy concerns and corporate evildoers of all creeds. Some of Palast's reports are downright shocking (if familiar). He shows, for example, how the WTO prevents cheap AIDS drugs from reaching victims in Africa and how World Bank loan policies have crippled the economies of Tanzania and other developing countries. On the home front, he details Exxon's horrific safety record before the Valdez disaster and reveals the price-gouging by Texas power companies during the California energy crisis. In Britain, Palast exposes the "cash for access" policies of the Blair administration, and blasts the legal system for shielding Pfizer Pharmaceuticals from lawsuits by victims who had defective Pfizer valves installed in their hearts. These are all good, important stories. Most of them, however, have been published before. This book is essentially a collection of Palast's newspaper articles, hastily stitched together with some commentary and exposition. As such, it lacks cohesiveness and the depth his subjects deserve. In addition, Palast's bombastic style and one-sided perspective do much to undermine his own credibility. How seriously should readers take a journalist who labels former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers an "alien" and dismisses Wal-Mart shareholders as "Wal-Martians"? There is much of value here, but readers who want a full-bodied, serious analysis of how globalization is affecting developing countries or how corporate giants pay for political favors should look elsewhere. Mr Palast's book is more a collection of articles. His writing style is somewhat sarcastic, but effective at getting his point across to the reader. Some of the subjects in this book are:The voter fraud in Florida during the 2000 presidential election. Mr Palast has done a lot of research on the issue and he has documentation. This whole scandal revolved around felons with voting rights restored by other states and the Florida Secretary of State not recognizing those restored rights and the related votes that were cast. The profiteering by pharmaceutical companies and the method sometimes used in securing patents for drugs. The exploitive side of illegal immigration-low wages for longer hours."Secret trade treaty documents reveal the shark hidden in the free trade swimming pool..."-page 67. That shark is revealed to be "the neccessity test" of Global Trade as decided by the World Trade Organization.Pat Robertson and his connection to George W. Bush's rebound in the 2000 election in the South Carolina and Virgina primaries. The author also examines some of the Reverend's financial dealings.Monsanto's influence in securing FDA approval of BST(bovine growth hormone)despite dubious results in lab tests conducted on rats. There is a strange parallel between the Clinton and second Bush administration's connections to energy companies like Enron and in the Clintons' case,Entergy International. The true "wisdom" of deregulated electricity is this...profits are privatized while losses are socialized.WalMart and the dubious connection to Chinese labor. Hillary Clinton's involvement with the corporation is addressed also.An interesting quote from Johnny Chung about the Clinton White House-"I see the White House is like a subway-you have to put in coins to open the gates."Greg Palast has written a very good,thoroughly-researched book about corruption in both Democrat and Republican administrations. I recommend this book and will be looking for more of his work.

.Greg Palast has written a book that weaves together his journalism investigations into a variety of government/corporate issues. He's hard-hitting and relentless when on the trail, judging by what he's collected in this book.I am very imprerssed with what he's uncovered in these pages, and I've come away wondering why we didn't read more of it here in the US media. He offers an explanation - - that the profit/cost-cutting motives of media corporations can hinder someone devoting much time to a single story, but these stories are so shocking, one has to question the efforts of our media. The format is a little frustrating, however, which is why I've only given it 4 stars. Each story is told in a succession of column reprints, and they overlap in their content, so there are times where you have a sense of deja vu. Also, as a result, the book comes off not just about the stories, but also how Palast covered them and peeled away the layers of the onion. So at times it sounds a bit self-serving.However, there is a value to Palast choosing this method. Because we see -how- Palast covered it step by step, the news is more credible and less 'from Mars.' It would be easier to read a single summary of all he learned, but less believable.Oh, and it's NOT just about Florida and the 2000 Presidential election. Palast covers a number of other topics, among them: problems with the IMF/World Bank and their stipulations to countries, many of which are outrageous; corporate America; presidential access for the wealthy; and the UK's Prime Minister Blair and lobbyists.

While it's been years since I read this book, I can clearly recall that I found great value in it. Not sure what Palast is doing these days, but when he wrote this book and others that followed it there's no doubt in my mind that he could be one of the top 10 best investigative journalists of all time. He doesn't sell out his principles, and always showed the courage to dig deep for the real truth as opposed to the "press release" journalism that is commonly practiced these days. My hat's off to Mr. Palast for his moxey, his character, and his commitment to doing something to make this a better world.

Greg Palast uncovers the truth and exposes it without siding or leaning with any political party. This is what true journalism is, we have too many "news programs" digesting the news for us and showing us their interpretations about what really matters. Most journalists nowadays are afraid to expose blatant injustices perpetrated by our government because those news are not what sales to the lethargic majority. Because this disinterest politicians made decisions for us that favors their pockets without any benefit to the communities and the people who they represent. We criticize other countries for being corrupt, meanwhile here corruption also reaches the highest levels of government, the only difference is that here we change the laws to make corruption "legal".

Everyone should read this book. Interesting perspective and he explained complex economic theory in normal language. Demystifying the complex ways that Gov. And corporations hide their crimes and horrible natures. Money is the root of all evil.

I'm only on page 115 of this book, but it was well worth the cost up to this point. In fact I plan to buy more copies for friends and relatives. I had moved on from the Florida election escapades and put it out of my mind as a bad experience that surely won't be repeated. This book has snapped me out of that dangerous mindset. It erased any fraction of a doubt I may have had about whether and how much manipulation goes on behind the scenes to control as much of our lives as possible. We must all maintain an awareness of what is going on if we are to survive as a Democracy...or should I say, RESTORE our Democracy.THIS BOOK SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING IN HIGH SCHOOL.
