Nice expose' of the Shadow Government/Deep States use of NGO's to overthrow foreign governments: USSR, Georgia, Ukraine, Bosnia, etc. Paid protesters seems to be a constant meme. Engdahl also debunks the Tiananmen Square episode in which western media blatantly lied.I especially liked his coverage of the way Yeltsin and a few cronies with help from the West created an Oligarchy in Russia from which blowback occurred when conditions got so bad that led to Putin & Co. trying to restore the economy, social order, etc.

A very clear, quick read. Spent far more time double-checking the authors assertions/facts than reading. This book is really an essay - it's use can be as a backbone onto which a person can flesh out with study & observation. A real journalist(s) have an infinite number of "investigations" to choose from today - for me I'm glad to be rather old, pity the children!Certainly worth a read.

Engdahl's "Manifest Destiny" is a great book, but his choice of the title is puzzling: the concept of "manifest destiny" is not thematized. A better title would have been "1984 Updated."Engdahl begins the book by explaining its subtitle - that the United States government (with the help of the corporate media) has been using contradictory ideas about freedom, democracy, and human rights to control the perceptions of its citizens. Orwell's description of the fictional country Oceania - "although Oceania is constantly at war, its citizens act as if there is peace" - is even more true about the United States now than it was when Orwell wrote his book.Discussing how the US has used "fake democracy" NGOs - especially the National Endowment for Democracy - to bring about regime change in countries deemed insufficiently supportive of Washington's program to create an all-inclusive empire, Engdahl began with Poland.Realizing that it was the weakest link in Moscow's chain of control, the Reagan–Bush White House and its CIA figured that, if Poland were to reject Communism, "all the dominoes of communist Eastern Europe, as well as the Soviet Union, would start to fall." After spending tens of millions of US taxpayer dollars to cause high prices and massive unemployment, so citizens would demand change, Washington spent more millions to support the trade union Solidarity, whose chairman, Lech Walesa, was elected Poland's president of Poland in 1990. Thus began the disintegration of the Soviet Empire. The following chapter was on the "Rape of Russia."However, although the demise of the Soviet Empire removed its brake on the American Empire, it also created huge problems: Besides the difficulty of retaining the huge Pentagon budget (most Americans expected a "peace" dividend that could be used for health, education, infrastructure, and the environment), there was the problem of how to justify the continuation of NATO under US leadership.In the chapters that I found most interesting and most appalling, Engdahl explained the solution of the George H.W. Bush administration: "trigger events in Yugoslavia that would explode in a violent war in the heart of Europe," thereby shattering the idea that European wars were a thing of the past. Although the Democrat Bill Clinton took the presidency away from the Republican Bush, he prosecuted the war to destroy Yugoslavia with undiminished zeal.

Manifest Destiny is an impeccably sourced revelation on how recent history has been (in essence) fabricated by our three letter agencies and the powers behind them, and with the help of the mainstream media. This book is a page turner and a head shaker.Take the time -- and take your time -- read his books (all of them), listen to his talks... William Engdahl is a national treasure...
